The health care community is still studying up on the long-awaited final rule on the "meaningful use" of electronic health records, while looking ahead to federal incentive payments set to begin in 2011.
Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs will qualify for incentive payments through Medicaid and Medicare.
In an iHealthBeat Special Report by Mina Kim, experts discuss the final rule and their next steps.
The Special Report includes comments from:
- Glen Tullman, CEO of Allscripts;
- Jason Mitchell, assistant director of the American Academy of Family Physicians' Center for Health IT; and
- Chantal Worzala, director of policy at the American Hospital Association.
National Coordinator for Health IT David Blumenthal has said that the criteria for later stages of the meaningful use incentive program will be more stringent (Kim, iHealthBeat, 8/12).
