Do Hospital CIOs Plan To Invest in Cloud-Based EHR or Health Data Exchange Technology?

Among CIOs of hospitals with electronic health record systems and health information exchange tools, 36% said their hospital plans to invest in cloud-based systems for both EHR and HIE technology, according to an Optum Institute for Sustainable Health survey conducted by Harris Interactive.

Twelve percent of CIOs said their hospital plans to invest in cloud-based systems only for HIE technology, while 11% said their hospital plans to invest in cloud-based systems only for EHR technology.

Forty-one percent of CIOs said their hospital has no plans to invest in cloud-based systems for either EHR or HIE technology.

When asked about the major advantages of using cloud-based technology, 57% of CIOs cited access to additional applications and 56% cited additional functionality.

The report is based on a nationally representative online survey conducted from December 2011 to January 2012 among CIOs from 301 U.S. hospitals.
