Recent Survey Highlights Need for Health Care Organizations To Strengthen Data Protection
A recent survey by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society found that many health care organizations are unprepared to meet new federal privacy and security standards. The study was sponsored by the security systems firm Symantec.
HIMSS officials said the survey also found that many respondents do not conduct security risk assessments.
In an iHealthBeat Special Report by Pat McConahay, experts discussed the importance of health data security protections.
The Special Report includes comments from:
- David Finn, health IT officer at Symantec;
- Lisa Gallagher, senior director of privacy and security at HIMSS;
- Susan McAndrew, deputy director of health information privacy at HHS; and
- Deborah Peel, founder and chair of Patient Privacy Rights.
Experts say health care organizations will need to implement new security protections in order to comply with the tightened regulations (McConahay, iHealthBeat, 11/16).
