Mental Health Providers Excluded From Health IT Incentives Back to Article >>

The exclusion of mental health providers from stimulus monies is unfortunate. Many studies continue to show pervasive links between behavioral health and long-term utilization of health care services. For example, abused women have been shown to use up to six times more medical services and have a significantly higher rate of chronic illnesses. By choosing to not include behavioral health care in its mandates, the administration is ignoring the ever-increasing body of data that shows that to improve health care we need to focus on developing a comprehensive and preventive system of care - and that includes mental health. ---Linda Toche-Manley, Ph.D., vice president of Polaris Health Directions (www.polarishealth.com)
