VA Seeks To Integrate Clinical Decision Support Tools With iEHR System

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to incorporate clinical decision support capabilities into the integrated electronic health record system -- or iEHR system -- that it will jointly operate with the Department of Defense, FierceEMR reports.

VA described its plans in a notice published last week on the Federal Business Opportunities website.

In the notice, VA said it is seeking input on specifications for clinical decision support capabilities that would operate as a service and not be tied to a specific EHR vendor (Durben Hirsch, FierceEMR, 7/4).

The project will focus on developing clinical decision support specifications for:

  • Event subscription and notification;
  • Order placement; and
  • User communication.

Timeline

VA is accepting comments on the project until July 9.

The Interior Department's National Business Center -- which is working on the initiative on behalf of VA -- expects to award a 12-month contract for the project in September (Mosquera, Government Health IT, 7/3).
