Health IT Work Groups Request Comments on Meaningful Use Stage 3

Work groups of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT's Policy and Standards committees are seeking public comments on specific issues as they work to develop criteria for Stage 3 of the meaningful use program, Health Data Management reports (Goedert, Health Data Management, 6/19).

Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health record systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

Advancing High-Quality Care

One request for comment came from the Health IT Policy Committee's quality measurement work group and the Health IT Standards Committee's clinical quality work group (Larsen, "Federal Advisory Committee Blog," ONC, 6/19). The two work groups are seeking input on ways to advance high-quality care in Stage 3 of the meaningful use program by:

  • Using clinical decision support tools;
  • Conducting queries about patient populations; and
  • Identifying opportunities for care improvement (Health Data Management, 6/19).

Incorporating Patient-Generated Data

The other request for comment came from the Health IT Policy Committee's work groups on meaningful use and quality measurement, as well as the Health IT Standards Committee's consumer engagement power team (Seidman, "Federal Advisory Committee Blog," ONC, 6/18).

The three work groups are seeking input on ways to incorporate patient-generated data from personal health records, glucose monitors and other sources into the Stage 3 meaningful use requirements (Health Data Management, 6/19).
