The Colorado Regional Health Information Organization has released a new report that examines issues related to sharing behavioral health data through health information exchanges, Health Data Management reports.
For the report, CORHIO held six meetings with behavioral health organizations and community mental health centers throughout the state to gather input on concerns, opportunities and priorities for integrating behavioral health data into health information exchanges (Goedert, Health Data Management, 4/5).
The report recommends three potential approaches to integrating such data into exchanges:
- The first model would require patients to opt-in to share more sensitive information -- such as mental health data -- through the exchange;
- The second model would segregate more sensitive information by health care provider; and
- The third model would allow patients to create a personal health record, giving them complete control of the sensitive information shared in the exchange (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 4/6).
