CMS has extended until April 30 its deadline for health care professionals to appeal their eligibility determination for payment year 2011 of the meaningful use program, Health Data Management reports (Goedert, Health Data Management, 4/3).
Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health record systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.
The eligibility period for Stage 1 of the meaningful use program began Jan. 1, 2011 and ended Dec. 31, 2011 (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 4/3).
Initially, health care professionals seeking to appeal their eligibility determination for payment year 2011 would have needed to file an appeal by March 30 (iHealthBeat, 1/24).
In setting the new deadline, CMS extended the appeals window by one month.
According to the agency, health care professionals can use the appeals process to demonstrate that they meet the criteria to receive incentive payments under the meaningful use program.
Additional information on the appeals process is available from CMS' website (Modern Healthcare, 4/3).
