ONC Launches Contest for Apps To Help Report Patient Safety Incidents

On Wednesday, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT announced the launch of a contest for innovative health IT tools that could facilitate the reporting of patient safety incidents, Health Data Management reports (Goedert, Health Data Management, 4/11).

About the Contest

The Reporting Patient Safety Events Challenge invites developers to create a health IT application that would:

  • Make it easier for health care providers to report patient safety incidents in hospital and ambulatory settings;
  • Allow staff to submit patient safety reports to public health agencies or other organizations;
  • Capture relevant patient demographic data, as well as information about the organization submitting the patient safety reports;
  • Enable the importation of relevant data from electronic health records, personal health records and other information systems;
  • Use the standards and services of the Nationwide Health Information Network; and
  • Be platform-agnostic (Goedert, Health Data Management, 4/11).

Prizes, Deadline

The first-place winner of the contest will receive $50,000, the second-place winner will receive $15,000 and the third-place winner will receive $5,000.

Developers have until July 23 to submit their applications (Mosquera, Government Health IT, 4/11).
