HHS Initiative To Develop Best Practices for Mobile Device Use

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT's Office of the Chief Privacy Officer and the HHS Office for Civil Rights have launched an initiative to identify privacy and security best practices for using mobile devices in health care settings, Government Health IT reports (Wicklund, Government Health IT, 1/26).

The Privacy & Security Mobile Device project will build on existing HIPAA guidelines with the goal of raising awareness and understanding among clinicians to help them improve the security and protection of health data while using mobile devices (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 1/26).

According to ONC, privacy and security best practices will be disseminated to health care providers, professionals and other organizations (Lee, Modern Healthcare, 1/26).

HHS plans to hold a public roundtable in the spring to gain input on the initiative (Goedert, Health Data Management, 1/25).
