Big Business, Little Data

A growing number of Californians are being sent to ambulatory surgery centers for a wide variety of procedures, yet little is known about the care they deliver because reporting is not required.

Keeping Track of Asthma

CHCF has made a second investment in Asthmapolis, a device that tracks asthma inhaler use and reports data through mobile phones to patients and doctors to better manage the disease.

HHS Preparing Proposed Rules for Stage 2 of Meaningful Use

HHS is in the final stages of preparation before it releases proposed rules for Stage 2 of the meaningful use program, Health Data Management reports.

Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health record systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

HHS has asked the Office of Management and Budget to review a proposed rule that will accompany the Stage 2 incentive program rules. The accompanying rule includes standards, implementation guidelines and certification criteria aimed at ensuring that EHRs support the Stage 2 requirements.

OMB review typically is one of the last steps before an agency releases proposed or final rules. HHS previously indicated that it would release the Stage 2 proposed rules in January or February 2012 (Goedert, Health Data Management, 1/23).
