A small number of vendors dominate the market among eligible health care providers and hospitals that have received incentive payments for the meaningful use of electronic health records, according to a database from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, Modern Healthcare reports.
Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR systems can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

CMS' latest report on eligible health care providers and hospitals that have received incentive payments under the meaningful use program.
Most Popular EHR Vendors Among Eligible Professionals
The database contains de-identified information on 21,697 health care providers who have used products from 217 different EHR vendors to receive meaningful use incentive payments. The five most popular EHR vendors were used by 54% of eligible professionals, according to the database.
Among those who have received incentive payments, about:
- 28% -- or 6,045 eligible professionals -- used EHR products by Epic Systems;
- 9% -- or 1,847 eligible professionals -- used EHR products by eClinicalWorks;
- 7% -- or 1,449 eligible professionals -- used EHR products by Allscripts;
- 5% -- or 1,158 eligible professionals -- used EHR products by athenahealth; and
- 5% -- or 999 eligible professionals -- used EHR products by Community Computer Service.
Most Popular EHR Vendors Among Hospitals
The database also contains information on 627 hospitals that have used products from 22 different EHR vendors to receive meaningful use incentive payments. The five most popular EHR vendors were used by 75% of hospitals, according to the database.
Among the hospitals that have received incentive payments, about:
- 26% -- or 165 hospitals -- used EHR products by Epic Systems;
- 22% -- or 140 hospitals -- used EHR products by Computer Programs and Systems, also known as CPSI;
- 11% -- or 71 hospitals -- used EHR products by Cerner;
- 9% -- or 54 hospitals -- used EHR products by Healthland; and
- 7% -- or 47 hospitals -- used EHR products by MEDITECH (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 1/13).
