Tenn. Hospital Launches Website To Publish Data From Genome Project

On Wednesday, St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., announced the launch of its new "Explore" website where it will publish results from a large genome sequencing study, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports (Charlier, Memphis Commercial Appeal, 1/12).

Background

In January 2010, St. Jude's started its Pediatric Cancer Genome Project in collaboration with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The project aims to sequence entire genomes of normal and cancerous cells of 600 pediatric patients with cancer. Researchers then will compare differences in the DNA of the normal and cancerous cells to identify genetic abnormalities that could lead to cancer.

About the Website

According to St. Jude's, the new Explore website aims to "expand access to high-quality genomic data related to pediatric cancers, accelerate discovery and hypothesis testing and provide comprehensive visualizations of the data" (St. Jude's Research Hospital release, 1/11).

The website will offer:

  • Access to single-patient genome data;
  • Links to publications;
  • Specific disease information; and
  • Summaries of PCGP discoveries (Goedert, Health Data Management, 1/12).
