AHIMA Launches Online Courses To Help Prepare for Rollout of ICD-10

TOPIC ALERT:

Health IT professionals preparing for implementation of the ICD-10 clinical coding system can receive assistance from a set of online courses developed by the American Health Information Management Association, CMIO reports (Gale, CMIO, 1/12).

Background on ICD-10

U.S. health care organizations are working to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets to accommodate codes for new diseases and procedures. The switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets means that health care providers and insurers will have to change out about 14,000 codes for about 69,000 codes.

Health care providers and insurers have until Oct. 1, 2013, to adopt new ICD-10 code sets (iHealthBeat, 11/18/11).

Details of Online Courses

According to AHIMA, the courses will aid health IT professionals of all expertise levels and at varying stages of ICD-10 implementation. The courses also can benefit individuals working in specialty settings, such as long-term care facilities, according to AHIMA.

AHIMA's Training Pathways Guide is available online to help health IT professionals choose the appropriate courses (CMIO, 1/12).
