Report: Successful Information Exchanges Foster Engagement

Successful health information exchanges are able to sustain "ongoing and effective stakeholder engagement" and win the trust of stakeholders, according to a new report by the National eHealth Collaborative, Modern Healthcare reports.

The report -- titled, "Secrets of HIE Success Revealed: Lessons from the Leaders" -- was funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and is based on the experiences of 12 exchange organizations that included for-profit, not-for-profit and government-run entities.

Key Findings

A key to successful health information exchanges is maintaining trust among stakeholders to avoid the perception that the exchange is not neutral, according to the report.

In addition, the report noted that successful exchanges ensure that shared health information is both accurate and protected.

According to the report:

  • All the information exchanges featured in the report have significant growth potential;
  • For most of the exchanges, offering data analysis resources to support population health and quality management is a priority; and
  • Extracting new value from patient data is vital to maintaining engagement among stakeholders.

However, barriers to the growth of health information exchanges exist, including a lack of generally accepted standards for health data transactions (Conn, Modern Healthcare, 8/2).
