KLAS Report: Progress Remains Slow in Shift to ICD-10 Code Sets

Less than 10% of health care providers are more than halfway along on their way to ICD-10 compliance, according to a new report from research firm KLAS, Healthcare IT News reports (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 10/27).

About ICD-10

U.S. health care organizations are working to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 code sets to accommodate codes for new diseases and procedures.

Health care providers and insurers have until Oct. 1, 2013 to adopt new ICD-10 code sets (iHealthBeat, 10/26)

Report Details

For the report, KLAS interviewed 163 health care providers about their readiness for the ICD-10 transition. Researchers found that most health care organizations still are in the planning stages.

The report also found that:

  • 76% of health care providers said they do not expect CMS to postpone the ICD-10 transition deadline;
  • 65% of health care providers are working or plan to work with third party firms on their ICD-10 transition effort;
  • 60% of health care providers are concerned about the ICD-10 readiness of their clinical or financial systems vendor; and
  • 8% of health care providers have not started preparing for the ICD-10 shift (Byers, CMIO, 10/26).
