In the third quarter of 2011, venture capital investments in companies providing health IT products and services reached $207 million, a 14% increase over the $182 million in investments during the same period last year, according to data from Dow Jones VentureSource, InformationWeek reports.
The data show that the health IT sector raised $445 million in venture funding during the first three quarters of this year. By the end of this year, total venture investment in the industry could surpass the $508 million raised last year, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.
Jessica Canning -- global research director for Dow Jones VentureSource -- said the health IT industry will "likely see a fairly significant increase in deals in the fourth quarter, bringing us above the 2010 level."
Canning added that of the 24 health IT investment deals made in Q3 2011, 18 were related to administrative services and electronic health records (Lewis, InformationWeek, 10/25).
