On Tuesday, the Health IT Policy Committee's privacy and security "Tiger Team" met to discuss the process of correctly matching patients with their data during exchanges of health information, Modern Healthcare's "IT Everything" reports.
The group agreed that there needs to be a standardized way to record and use elemental data fields on patient records in an information exchange. These data fields include:
- First, middle and last names;
- Dates of birth;
- Street addresses; and
- ZIP codes.
Paul Egerman -- a software entrepreneur and co-chair of the Tiger Team -- said the federal government eventually should approve of standards so that all the stakeholders involved in health information exchange can operate under the same rules (Conn, "IT Everything," Modern Healthcare, 1/19).
