The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives recently published a guide aimed at helping CIOs and other IT executives implement electronic health records to qualify for federal incentive payments, Modern Healthcare reports (Robeznieks, Modern Healthcare, 8/19).
Under the 2009 federal economic stimulus package, health care providers who demonstrate "meaningful use" of certified electronic health records will receive incentive payments through Medicaid and Medicare.
The 80-page booklet, called "The CIO's Guide to Implementing EHRs in the HITECH Era," incorporates information from 170 CHIME members about real-world EHR experiences (Goedert, Health Data Management, 8/20).
The guide evolved from an earlier publication CHIME developed with the American Hospital Association, called "The Healthcare Leader Action Guide on Implementing Electronic Health Records" (Mearian, Computerworld, 8/20).
