Site Allows Residents of Canada To Bid on Health Care Services Abroad

Canadian patients seeking medical treatment for a range of issues can now use a website -- MediBid -- to request bids from about 3,000 physicians worldwide in an effort to avoid long wait times and obtain experimental treatments, the Hamilton Spectator reports.

MediBid President and CEO Ralph Weber said that 80 patients per day use the website, which provides information on location, price of treatment, where physicians attended school, and how quickly a patient can obtain an appointment.

The website is maintained throughout several U.S. locations.

How the Site Works

To use the site, patients create no-cost profiles by answering basic health questions and providing information on their medical needs, which can range from knee replacements to dental cleanings (Frketich, Hamilton Spectator, 7/17).

Patients then receive a list of providers -- including information on their location and credentials -- and are able to request a cash-price quote for services.

Payments are arranged between the doctor and patient, although they are not likely to be eligible for government reimbursement (Weidner, Waterloo Record, 7/19).
