New WebMD Health Service Moves Into Social Networking Arena

On Tuesday, WebMD officials announced the launch of WebMD Health Exchange, a social networking system intended to provide consumers with a platform to engage health experts in discussions and solicit medical advice and support from other consumers, Healthcare IT News reports.

Wayne Gattinella, president and CEO of WebMD, said the new system will let members create personalized communities where they can safely share information with other users, as well as groups that will be open to the public.

Medical professionals will be on hand to participate in community discussions, and experts from various medical groups and societies are expected to lead discussions with members.

The WebMD Health Exchange system will be open to third-party sponsors, who will be allowed to create branded exchanges and host consumer discussions on a variety of health and wellness issues (Manos, Healthcare IT News, 3/9).
