Report Forecasts 500M Users of Mobile Health Apps by 2015

Within the next five years, about 500 million individuals will be using mobile health care applications on their smart phones, according to a new report, Computerworld reports.

The report -- titled "Global Mobile Health Market Report 2010-2015" -- was produced by market research company research2guidance.

Report Details

The report estimates that there will be 1.4 billion smart phone users by 2015 and that more than one-third of them will have a health-related app.

According to the report, there are about 17,000 mobile health apps in major stores, 74% of which are obtained through application service providers.

The report found that:

  • About 43% of mobile health apps are aimed at health care professionals (Mearian, Computerworld, 11/16); and
  • About 26% of the applications are available at no cost to users.

Market Growth

Ralf-Gordon Jahns, head of research at research2guidance, said the market for mobile health apps is ready to accelerate.

According to the report:

  • 46% of industry revenue will come from mobile health-related services;
  • 30% of industry revenue will come from device sales; and
  • 14% of industry revenue will come from app downloads (Bruce, E-Health Europe, 11/17).
