The governance work group of HHS' Health IT Policy Committee is seeking public comment on establishing a system to govern the Nationwide Health Information Network, Government Health IT reports.
The work group is developing final recommendations on NHIN governance so health care providers can begin using the network to exchange patient data.
Types of Input Sought
The work group, which hopes to receive input by Nov. 3, is looking for suggestions on existing strategies that might be appropriate for NHIN governance, with or without modifications.
The group also is seeking comments about whether new governance strategies are necessary for NHIN.
Structure for Comments
To help guide the public feedback, John Lumpkin, chair of the work group, said the core functions of governance are to provide:
- A uniform set of policies to help health care providers exchange health information;
- Validation of eligibility for the data exchange; and
- Consequences for failing to comply with the rules.
In early 2011, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT plans to release a proposed rule on NHIN governance (Mosquera, Government Health IT, 10/26).
