HITSP Slated To Disband at Month's End; ONC To Seek Successor Group

The Health IT Standards Panel is scheduled to disband when its contract expires at the end of the month, Government Health IT reports.

President George W. Bush's administration established HITSP in 2005 to advance its goals for establishing a national electronic health records system. The administration tasked the group with developing standards for "use cases" involving the transfer of large volumes of complex data.

HITSP's standards work also helped shape the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT's interim final rule on EHR certification standards.

John Halamka, chair of HITSP, said ONC soon will solicit proposals for a new standards group. He said the new panel might be either a version of the existing HITSP or an entirely different organization (Mosquera, Government Health IT, 1/25).
