HITSP Tackles Standards for E-Health Record Use in Clinical Research

More than 30 organizations are providing financial support for an initiative by the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel to coordinate standards for the use of electronic health records in clinical research, Health Data Management reports.

In addition, six federal agencies are supporting the initiative.

The initiative aims to develop a streamlined electronic standards implementation guide that details relevant standards, how they support clinical research and how they correspond with existing HITSP interoperability specifications.

HITSP formed two committees of volunteer experts who began work on the clinical research initiative earlier this month.

HITSP is still seeking experts in areas, such as:

  • Standardized vocabularies for clinical research;
  • Research-specific data elements;
  • Research-specific datasets; and
  • The processes of clinical research sponsoring organizations (Goedert, Health Data Management, 6/17).
