Doctors in BCBS Networks Face Data Breach After Laptop Theft

TOPIC ALERT:

Information about physicians participating in BlueCross BlueShield Association health plans nationwide might have been compromised after a laptop containing information about the doctors was stolen in August, the Boston Globe reports.

A BCBS spokesperson said tens of thousands of physicians could be affected by the breach.

The data on the laptop are information that BCBS affiliates send to BCBS' Chicago headquarters weekly to ensure that BCBS' database of health care providers is up to date.

BCBS spokesperson Jeff Smokler said that an employee violated company rules by downloading an unencrypted version of the information to a personal laptop, which was stolen.

The file did not include information about patients or personal health records (Lazar, Boston Globe, 10/3).
