AHA President Calls for Public-Private Model for Creating IT Standards

At an Institute of Medicine committee meeting on Monday, Rick Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, called for a new model incorporating "a public-private partnership" to develop and adopt federal health IT standards, AHA News reports.

HHS' Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT tasked the IOM Committee on the Review of the Adoption and Implementation of Health IT Standards with evaluating development processes for health IT standards. The committee also will assess whether ONCHIT's processes are aligned with common priorities to meet the challenges of the national health IT agenda.

The committee on Sunday launched a two-day meeting to hear from health care experts on the topic. The committee will release its findings and recommendations in October (AHA News, 9/17).
