Social Networking Site Connects Medical Students, Physicians

A group of Arizona physicians and a premedical undergraduate student have created a social networking Web site that is intended as a MySpace equivalent for the medical industry, the Business Journal of Phoenix reports.

The Web site, called Tiromed, connects medical students at varying levels with physicians and other health professional mentors in 60 countries. The site currently has more than 2,300 members and adds hundreds of members monthly.

Henry Sanel, an anesthesiologist with the Scottsdale Center for Advanced Pain Management, developed and designed the site with colleagues and his son, a premedical student.

Daniel Mitten, associate director of the Maricopa County Medical Society in Arizona, said he was concerned that it looked too consumer-driven and might lose its professional focus, but a few weeks after joining he said the site offered enormous benefits to the medical community, the Business Journal reports.

Mitten also said that the benefits of the site include Tiromed's membership being limited to medical professors or physicians and limited advertising.

Tiromed has added the Latino Medical Student Association and the Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association to its membership (Young, Business Journal of Phoenix, 7/27).
