Mississippi Medicaid Reports Cost Savings From E-Prescribing

The use of Informed Decisions' eMPOWERx electronic prescribing and decision support system by 225 providers helped save the Mississippi Medicaid program more than $14.4 million in 2006, Health Data Management reports.

Providers use the system to receive via their handhelds real-time, 100-day prescription drug histories for Medicaid patients, as well as medication lists, drug interactions and other clinical decision support tools.

The service also helped save $922,000 in hospital costs by giving providers drug interaction data at the point of care. In addition, clinicians who used the system wrote 20% fewer prescriptions than those who did not because they had more knowledge of duplications in therapy and fraud, according to Informed Decisions (Health Data Management, 6/29).
