Blogger Calls for More User-Friendly Medical Devices

American Public Media's "Future Tense" on Wednesday included a discussion with Amy Tenderich -- a journalist and author who writes a blog about diabetes -- about making medical devices more user-friendly through greater customization and improved aesthetics.

She recently published an open letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking the company to develop an iPod-like device capable of monitoring glucose and delivering insulin.

Tenderich said the letter was not meant to suggest that Apple actually produce such a device but to encourage discussion about improving designs for medical devices -- such as insulin pumps -- that users must wear during daily activities (Gordon, "Future Tense," American Public Media, 4/11).

Audio of the segment is available online.
