The American Health Information Management Association released a new report calling for the federal government to consolidate oversight of health IT, quality and transparency initiatives under the American Health Information Community, Health Data Management reports.
The report calls for states to create a governance model to coordinate health IT, quality and transparency initiatives and recommends that the federal government contribute funding to health transformation projects (Health Data Management, 1/29). State and federal collaboration will be key to the success of efforts aimed at transitioning to a value-driven health care system, according to the report (AHA News, 1/29).
AHIMA's Foundation of Research and Education published the report, which also recommends that AHIC -- an advisory group formed in 1995 by HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt -- become a public/private organization by 2008.
The report, "Development of State Level HIE Initiatives: Extension Tasks," is a follow-up study to a 2006 report AHIMA's Foundation of Research and Education published under a federal contract on the status and challenges of state-level health information exchanges (Health Data Management, 1/29).
