The California Regional Health Information Organization by March plans to choose a vendor to fund and build a statewide health data exchange, Health Data Management reports.
CalRHIO, a coalition of California health care stakeholders, in December 2006 requested proposals from organizations with relevant experience, functional products, and detailed plans to finance and maintain the health information exchange, according to Donald Holmquest, president and CEO of CalRHIO.
CalRHIO is reviewing the eight bids it received from:
- Accenture;
- Computer Sciences;
- Covisint;
- IBM/Axolotl;
- McKesson;
- Medicity;
- Sun Microsystems; and
- Wellogic (Health Data Management, 1/29).
"By 2014, we want to make it possible for any authorized health care provider in California to be able to securely access patient information regardless of where health care services are delivered," Holmquest said.
California could save $9 billion annually with a fully developed statewide health data exchange system, according to some estimates (CalRHIO
press release, 1/29).
