Online Tool Helps Identify Susceptibility to Disease

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has developed an online tool that will help biomedical researchers identify small alterations in human genes that indicate a person's susceptibility to disease, the Cincinnati Business Courier reports.

The tool, called PolyDoms, combines research on the genetic influences of disease with computerized estimates of the impact of genomic changes on protein structures and functions, according to the Business Courier.

PolyDoms was developed "to expedite and advance research in personalized, predictive and preventive medicine," Bruce Aronow, professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's and University Hospital and co-director of the Center for Computational Medicine, said.

Researchers at Cincinnati Children's collaborated with the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center and the Computational Medicine Center to create the tool. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute funded the research (Cincinnati Business Courier, 1/23).
