European Scientists Developing Hospital Robot System

European Union-funded scientists are working to develop a three-robot prototype system that would increase hospital efficiency and allow staff to spend more time with patients, the Scotsman reports.

The robots will be able to perform simple tasks, such as cleaning up spills, taking messages and guiding visitors to patients' rooms. The robots also could be equipped with a laser thermometer to measure body heat from a distance and could be used to administer medication.

The three robots will be able to communicate with one another and coordinate their workload. The robots will have built-in face and voice recognition technology so they can communicate with patients and identify unauthorized visitors, the Scotsman reports.

Scientists from the universities of Warwick, England; Cardiff, England; Newcastle, England; and Dublin, Ireland, are collaborating on the IWARD project and plan to complete the three-robot prototype system by 2010 (Howarth, Scotsman, 1/22).
