Health Care Industry at Odds Over HHS' Timeline for Adoption of New Medical Codes

In an iHealthBeat Special Report by Deirdre Kennedy, representatives from health care industry associations discussed HHS' proposal for adopting the new ICD-10 code set for electronic transactions by Oct. 1, 2011.

The Special Report includes comments from:

  • George Arges from the American Hospital Association;
  • Dan Rode from the American Health Information Management Association; and
  • Robert Tennant from the Medical Group Management Association.

Several health care organizations have urged HHS to modify its timeline for what some industry insiders say will be one of the most massive changes in health care since Medicare's arrival almost 50 years ago.

Meanwhile, other groups are pushing for rapid adoption, arguing that there will be a worthwhile return on the investment in the future (Kennedy, iHealthBeat, 11/10).

It is beyond me as to why the US government has failed to update this classification system. It came into use by other WHO member states in 1994. I find it interesting HHS' Timeline for adoption of "New" Medical Codes is in 2011 as ICD-10 is expected to be revised in 2011, where it will be then called ICD-11...
