Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) recently announced that Michigan will apply for federal stimulus funding to support the state's health information exchange efforts, Crain's Detroit Business reports.
Michigan for the last three years has been working to develop the Michigan Health Information Network to allow doctors, hospitals, insurers and other health providers to share patients' medical information.
Michigan hopes to use federal stimulus funding to integrate its seven regional health information exchanges into a statewide network by 2012 (Greene, Crain's Detroit Business, 9/15).
Michigan Department of Community Health Director Janet Olszewkski detailed the state's plan in a letter to HHS (Habermehl, Bay City Times, 9/15).
States have until Oct. 16 to apply for health information exchange grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. One grant, ranging from $4 million to $40 million, will be awarded per state (Goedert, Health Data Management, 9/15).
