NIH Urges Employees To Post Health-Related Topics on Wikipedia

In an effort to boost the reliability of online health information, NIH is urging its scientists and science writers to create and edit Wikipedia articles on topics in their fields, the Washington Post reports.

This month at NIH headquarters, NIH and the Wikimedia Foundation -- the publisher of Wikipedia -- hosted a training session on the tools and regulations of wiki culture. During the two-day workshop, called Wikipedia Academy, Wikipedia volunteers gave presentations designed to encourage NIH employees to become editors of the online encyclopedia.

John Burklow, NIH's public liaison, said NIH and the Wikimedia Foundation both share a common goal "that the information on Wikipedia is of the highest quality and up-to-date" (Caputo, Washington Post, 7/28).
