Canadian Initiative Falls Short of National EHR Implementation Goals

About 17% of Canadians have a core electronic health record, according to a new report by Canada Health Infoway, Health Data Management reports.

In 2001, CHI launched a $1.576 billion initiative to implement EHRs nationwide.

The program initially aimed to help 50% of Canadians obtain a core EHR by 2009. The group later pushed its goal back to 2010.

Although the current 17% mark falls short of the goal, CHI still lists the 2010 benchmark as achievable.

The report also credits CHI with increasing public awareness about EHR use (Goedert, Health Data Management, 6/30).
