IRS Grants Federal Tax-Exempt Status to Rural California RHIO

The Internal Revenue Service has awarded federal tax-exemption status to the East Kern County Integrated Technology Association, a Tehachapi, Calif.-based regional health information organization, Health Data Management reports.

In addition to health information exchange services, the RHIO provides electronic health record and personal health record software.

After years of inaction, IRS recently started awarding tax-exempt status to health information exchanges and RHIOs.

Attaining the 501(c)3 not-for-profit status can help health information exchanges and RHIOs obtain grant funding from corporations, foundations and other entities, Health Data Management reports (Goedert, Health Data Management, 4/23).
